It’s On Us To Stop Sexual Assault

Another article to start your day right, the Barack Obama‘s administration has released the It’s On US campaign. The campaign features a host of tools, over 40 partners which are championing the initiative, and some snazzy videos about ending sexual assault for both men and women.

The pledge itself is short, sweet, and to the point:

“To RECOGNIZE that non-consensual sex is sexual assault.

To IDENTIFY situations in which sexual assault may occur.

To INTERVENE in situations where consent has not or cannot be given.

To CREATE an environment in which sexual assault is unacceptable and survivors are supported.”

What is most exciting about this campaign is the fourth component of the pledge – creating an environment in which sexual assault is unacceptable and survivors are supported. So often survivors are not supported, indeed they’re often treated as the guilty party, that the shame or fear of speaking out keeps the victim silent.

I’d love to see this kind of campaign here in Canada. /EMH
